Discover if you can outsmart ROM experts at the Museum’s signature fundraiser

People examining a piece of armour

(Toronto, Ontario – September 25, 2013) The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) presents the 17th annual Fact or Fiction on Wednesday, October 2, 2013, hosted by Carol Off and Jeff Douglas from CBC’s As It Happens. The ROM’s signature fundraiser invites guests to play a hilarious guessing game with Museum experts, compete for an extraordinary grand prize, and enjoy a gourmet three-course dinner.

Scorecards in hand, Fact or Fiction participants will examine 15 unusual objects from the ROM’s vast collections. Our clever curators will present two plausible descriptions for each and it’s up to the players to determine which explanation is true—and which is totally bogus. For instance, is that real -scale armour that dates back to AD 200 or is it fake scale armour that was cut from an old sheet of bronze and artificially patinated? The guest with the most correct answers will win a luxury trip for two to the Dominican Republic, generously provided by ROM Governor Rebecca MacDonald.

Proceeds raised by Fact or Fiction support curatorial research and educational programs at the ROM. The ROM is a major extra-curricular educator and Canada’s largest field research museum with staff conducting field work in more than 30 countries around the globe.

Tables include 10 tickets and are available for $10,000 each. A limited number of single tickets are available for $500 each. Table buyers can select an area of the ROM that interests them most—palaeontology, fashion, ancient cultures, biodiversity, decorative arts, and more—and spend an unforgettable dinner with a ROM expert of that area.

Five winners of the ROM Student Story Contest will attend Fact or Fiction and participate in the game. Other children (suggested age of 10+).are welcome to attend with their family members and encouraged to outsmart the adults.

Guests can purchase a table or tickets, or donate by visiting www.rom.on.ca/factorfiction or contacting Katie McMullen at katiemc@rom.on.ca or 416.586.5772. Tax receipts for the maximum allowable amount will be issued per Canada Revenue Agency guidelines. The event is organized by Committee Chair Kasia Jamroz, and committee members VJ Bala, Natalka Haras, Stephanie Kremer and Gregg Walker.
