Numerous interactive activities and 200 remarkable artifacts appeal to the whole family
ROM for the Holidays’ extended hours provide more opportunities to visit Pompeii
Toronto, Ontario, November 24, 2015 - Pompeii: In the Shadow of the Volcano is now in its final weeks at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). After six crowd-pleasing months, Pompeii closes Sunday, January 3, 2016.
Since its explosive opening in June 2015, more than 200,000 visitors (as of November 23) have experienced the exhibition’s dramatic story of an ancient city captured in time. Pompeii features approximately 200 artifacts with several objects never before travelling outside Italy. These include several new copies of casts of those who perished in Pompeii, created using state-of-the-art 3-D technology. These casts make their international debut at the ROM. Enhancing the experience for the whole family, interactive activities are integrated throughout the exhibition.
Pompeii’s destruction is one of history’s most well known natural disasters. Nearly 2000 years ago—in Year 79—Mount Vesuvius, a seemingly inactive volcano in southern Italy, erupted with great force. Within 24 hours, the city of Pompeii vanished under metres of ash and falling debris, remaining hidden for nearly 1,700 years—until archaeological excavations uncovered the city nearly intact.
Programming
A full calendar of related programming for adults and families has complemented
Pompeii throughout its ROM engagement.
Volcanic Bash, the fall season’s finale of
#FNLROM, takes place on November 27. While togas are optional, with the event’s entertainment and hospitality offerings themed to the exhibition, ancient Roman garb is highly encouraged!
On December 1,
Italian Extravaganza, presented in partnership with the Italian Trade Commission, firmly establishes that Italian cuisine goes far beyond pizza and pasta. The lecture series
ROM Speaks: The World of Pompeii, featuring world renowned experts,
has explored past and modern day Pompeii amid the danger of life in the shadow of an active volcano. The series’ final
talk takes place on December 8.
Hours & Tickets
To allow as many visitors as possible to enjoy the exhibition in its final weeks, the Museum offers
extended hours through
ROM for the Holidays (with discounted admission from 4:30 to 8:30 pm). Last entry to
Pompeii is one and a half hours earlier than general Museum closing hours.
Pompeii is always free for ROM Members with additional ticketing information
here. For only $5 extra ($4 for Members), guided tours are offered daily at 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm with French tours available every Friday at 2:00 pm.
