Shino Sugimoto is a Vertebrate Palaeontology Technician in the Department of Natural History at the ROM.
Shino is a fossil preparator with over a decade of experience. She received a Bachelor of Integrated Studies (BIS) in Geology, Archaeology, and Anthropology from the Weber State University, Utah where she learned preparation techniques through internships and volunteer work at the Utah Museum of Natural History and the Utah Geological Survey. In 2008, she immigrated to Canada from Japan and had contract project-based jobs as a fossil preparator for Research Casting International, the University of Toronto (Mississauga), and the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), until she became a full-time vertebrate palaeontology technician with the ROM in 2016.
Shino has repaired and restored both vertebrate and invertebrate fossils, and has prepared over 1000 specimens with a wide range in taxonomy (dinosaurs, fish, amphibians, and reptiles), geological time (Paleozoic to the Mesozoic), geography (e.g. Mongolia, Morocco, Sudan, South Africa, and North America), and matrix type. She was involved in fossil preparation for many ROM displays, such as the Barosaurus for the James and Louise Temerty Galleries of the Age of Dinosaurs, Wendiceratops for the “New Dino Discovered” exhibit, and the specimens for the “Dawn of the Life” preview gallery. Additionally, her work includes extensive molding and casting, meticulous record keeping, specimen photography for the ROM's vertebrate collections database, and participation in ROM fieldwork.
