(Toronto, Ontario - October 30, 2007) The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) is proud to announce the 15th annual Studies in Silver Lecture, The Clarkson Cup: Lord Stanley Move Over! on Thursday, November 1, 2007. Cup-creator and nationally renowned artist, Beth Biggs of the New Brunswick College of Art and Design, will lead a discussion about the Clarkson Cup, the women’s Stanley Cup, and its importance in women’s hockey and as a Canadian contemporary creation. The lecture will take place at 5:30 pm in the ROM’s Signy and Cléophée Eaton Theatre, following a 4:30 pm reception. To purchase a ticket, contact 416.586.5797. Tickets cost $30 for Museum Members, Students and Seniors and $35 for the General Public.
In August 2005, when Beth Biggs received a phone call from the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, then Governor General of Canada, asking her to design and construct the Clarkson Cup, she felt “surprise, excitement and fear.” She now says, “A highlight of my career, the Clarkson Cup has given me an intense sense of satisfaction and pride in being a part of Canadian history.”
The Clarkson Cup: Lord Stanley Move Over!, presented by the Department of Museum Volunteers (DMV) and the ROM, will cover the development and production of this important piece of Canadian contemporary silver-smithing, a symbolic piece for women’s athletics and sports. The cup was designed and hand-crafted through the collaboration of native and non-native artists from Nunavut and truly represents a Canadian identity.
