New Natural History Gallery opening Spring 2009
Schad Gallery of Biodiversity, scheduled to open at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in Spring 2009, explores the diversity of life on earth and how these species and habitats are being threatened by human activity. This 10,000 square-foot gallery presents more than a thousand specimens, showcasing three major themes: Life Is Diverse, Life Is Interrelated and Life Is In Crisis. On-site instructors, live and recorded video and multi-media displays, and live specimens/habitats communicate the powerful statement about life on earth, at the same time offering optimistic solutions and actions that individuals may take.
A series of displays weaving through the centre of the Schad Gallery reveals the science of biodiversity and brings attention to endangered and extinct species. Along the gallery’s perimeter, ecosystem displays highlight the diverse plant and animal communities from around the world. Ranging from tropical forests to grasslands habitats, these ecosystems illustrate the interconnections of species and habitats. Visitors can learn about the coral reef through an aquarium home to live fish and
invertebrates, walk below displays of shark models and migratory birds, and learn about global warming in the Arctic—all in one visit.
A dynamic component of the gallery is the Earth Rangers Studio - an innovative classroom and studio for lectures, discussions and educational programs. Wired for broadcast capability, this space will provide programming on the latest scientific research, news and relevant issues. The Schad Gallery of Biodiversity is named for Robert Schad and family. Robert Schad is the founder and chairman of the partnership-driven environmental charity Earth Rangers while Elizabeth Schad is a ROM Governor. Their generous gift supports the creation of this Gallery, its programming, as well as related scientific research by the ROM’s curators and associates in the National Biodiversity and Conservation Centre.
Reich + Petch Design International is responsible for the innovative design of the Schad Gallery of Biodiversity.
