Fact? or Fiction?, the phenomenally successful signature fundraising event organized by the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) Governors, returns for an 11th incredible year on Wednesday, October 17, 2007. The event will take place from 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm in the Hyacinth Gloria Chen Crystal Court of the ROM’s Michael Lee-Chin Crystal, a suitably impressive venue for this social and intellectual feast. Five hundred guests are expected to enjoy an evening of much gourmet food and one challenging game
Fact? or Fiction? allows guests to match wits with devious members of the Museum’s curatorial staff to discover the truth behind 20 mysterious artifacts from the ROM’s diverse collections. For each object, two plausible descriptions are offered by two curators, and participants must choose which explanation is correct. Participants can question the experts on their way to determining which of the convincing descriptions is fact and which is fiction. At stake are extraordinary prizes, including this year’s Grand Prize of a 13-day tour of Egypt including a Nile Cruise, courtesy of Canadian Travel Abroad Ltd. and Air France.
The evening, hosted this year by radio personality Humble Howard Glassman, begins with a 6:30 pm reception during which guests can pick up a scorecard and enjoy a signature cocktail. At 7:00 pm, guests can indulge in a gourmet buffet dinner as they play the game. By 9:00 pm, the winners are determined and the prizes are awarded. The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat are accompanied by delicious dessert and coffee.
The Fact? or Fiction? Organizing Committee includes Lesley Belows, Peter Carruthers, Suzie Lewis, Jennifer F. Longhurst, Karyn McLean, Sandie Orlando, Ric Randmaa, and Jillian Swartz. Committee Chairman is Robert Pierce.
All proceeds from Fact? or Fiction? go to the ROM Research Endowment Fund. The annual event is a major source of funding for ROM research. The ROM is the largest field research museum in Canada with staff conducting research internationally in more than 30 countries. This research addresses numerous areas of study in both Natural History and World Cultures. To date, Fact? or Fiction? has raised over $600,000 for this work enriching our understanding of the world and environment. Tickets to the unique evening are $250 each, with partial tax receipts available, and may be purchased online here.
