Re: Crystal Myths: Behind the ROM's philanthropic façade, The Globe and Mail, March 28, 2015
We’re extraordinarily grateful to the generous donors who supported the Renaissance ROM project, which entirely transformed the Museum, Bloor Street and the cultural landscape of Toronto. Renaissance ROM doubled the amount of artifacts and specimens on public display at the Museum and created over 300,000 square feet of new and renovated galleries, classrooms and learning spaces for the public. This visionary project established the ROM as one of the leading museums of the world.
The Renaissance ROM Campaign remains one of the most successful cultural fundraising campaigns in Canadian history with $416 million raised by thousands of donors and philanthropic leaders. Since the completion of the Campaign in June 2010, donors have contributed an additional $54 million in support of the ROM. I’m encouraged that the ROM is now on track to meet all of its commitments to the Ontario Financing Authority.
The response from our community of visitors, donors, patrons and corporate partners has been overwhelmingly positive. In the 27 years that I have been with the ROM, I have seen the power of philanthropy in action. It will continue to play a critical role in the future success of the Museum. We are very grateful for the unwavering support from our donors.
