ONTARIO’S LEADING BIOLOGISTS SURVEY NORTH SHORE OF LAKE SUPERIOR TO CELEBRATE CANADA 150

MEDIA ADVISORY

Biologists from the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry will descend on a newly acquired 2500-acre piece of land on the North Shore of Lake Superior to survey its biodiversity at The Big Trout Bay BioBlitz. The Nature Conservancy of Canada recently purchased the property, and will act as hosts for this intensive, week-long adventure.

Beginning on Saturday, July 15 and running until Friday July 21, the Big Trout Bay area, approximately 35 km southwest of Thunder Bay, will become home to all types of taxonomic expertise: scientists who specialize in specific types of life – from insects to birds and mammals, lichens to vascular plants. The Big Trout Bay BioBlitz is one of ten Canada-wide, scientist-only BioBlitz events that is part of BioBlitz Canada 150, a Canada 150 Signature Project that is supported by Heritage Canada and the Canadian Wildlife Federation.

While most BioBlitz events last 24 hours, and include non-scientists or citizen scientists, this event will span an entire week – day and night – and will be conducted by highly specialized biological experts. A public open house will take place on Thursday, July 20 2017 to invite all members of the public, media, and local environmental youth groups to interact with scientists and learn more about the biodiversity along the north shore of Lake Superior.

BioBlitz Canada 150 at Big Trout Bay is presented by the Canadian Wildlife Federation, Royal Ontario Museum, Nature Conservancy of Canada, and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.
