Statement from the Royal Ontario Museum

The Globe and Mail published a story today on Renaissance ROM, an expansion project that was supported by a philanthropic campaign which ran from 2002 to 2010. The campaign supported the addition of new gallery spaces, curatorial resources and the building of the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal.

Renaissance ROM was an extraordinary achievement and stands as one of Canada’s most successful cultural fundraising campaigns raising $416 million. Thanks to Canadian philanthropic leaders, thousands of donors were inspired to join together to transform the ROM and enhance Toronto’s cultural landscape.

The ROM is supported by a dedicated and passionate community of donors whose generosity is crucial to the Museum’s success. The ROM Governors works in close partnership with its donors and at all times donor privacy is strictly protected. The Museum is grateful for the generosity of all of its donors including those named by The Globe and Mail, Shreyas Ajmera, Michael Lee-Chin and Alex Shnaider. All gifts made to the Renaissance ROM campaign are in compliance with their schedules and close to 93% of all gifts have been received – a remarkable accomplishment given the impact of the 2008 Global Financial Crisis on the economy.

The Museum is in a sound financial position and is on track to meet all its commitments to the Ontario Financing Authority. The ROM is well positioned for its next century with a new leadership team that have a breadth of experience across the cultural, financial, retail and philanthropic sectors and a world-class staff and volunteers that are committed to inspiring visitors with engaging exhibitions and programs.
