ROMBus: Transformations: Architectural rebirth

Transformations: Architectural rebirth
Tuesday, October 22, 2024, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

How many times have you encountered a house of worship that is now a home, restaurant, or new house of faith? As communities grow and change, we see religious buildings repurposed to reflect new realities. In a case study for reuse, some are deconsecrated to become family homes, restaurants, or other community buildings, while others are adapted to support other faiths. On this special day trip, we visit three buildings that began life in one faith and have since been converted to serve a completely different religious community.

ROM curator emeritus, Corey Keeble joins us on our itinerary, which includes an Anglican church that has been transformed into a Hindu Temple for the country’s oldest Hindu community. Next up, a Synagogue that has metamorphosed into the magnificent St George’s Greek Orthodox Church through the artistic work of monks from Mt. Athos, Greece. It is here we will enjoy a Greek lunch served in style. To round out our day, we visit another Anglican church that has been covered with magnificent icons and reborn as a Russian Orthodox church.

Note: This itinerary includes some walking.  Please wear comfortable shoes.
